D18/E18 Integrating Mental Health into Primary Care: Dramatic Improvements in Cost and Quality

This session will demonstrate how two health systems have implemented mental health care into primary care. Dramatic improvements in patient and provider satisfaction, clinical outcomes, and control over costs will be presented. Key components of successful mental health integration (MHI) diffusion will be discussed. Participants will be encouraged to identify barriers and strategic opportunities for MHI within their settings.

After this presentation you will be able to:

  • Define the key components of MHI to help understand your organization's current process and how it can be changed.
  • Improve your ability to identify and deal with the burden of mental health concerns on clinical practice.
  • Discuss the relationship between cost and quality in the MHI model and start to operationalize strategies for dealing with the financial impact of MHI.
  • Identify quality improvement measures needed to implement and sustain an MHI model, and develop a data collection and reporting plan.
