A3/B3 Five Useful Ideas for Improving Flow in the Emergency Department

      Improving emergency department and hospital-wide patient flow is a recommendation of the recent IOM report, “The Future of Emergency Care in the United States Health System.” Two practicing ED physicians who are faculty for IHI's Emergency Department IMPACT Learning and Innovation Community will share five useful ideas to improve flow in the ED. The ideas are in areas such as demand/capacity matching, the intake process, admissions from the ED, reliability, and managing behavioral health patients.

      After this presentation you will be able to:

  • Identify new and useful ideas for improving patient flow in the emergency department.
  • Describe specific ideas you can apply in your emergency department.
Kevin M. Nolan, MA, Statistician, Associates in Process Improvement; Kirk Jensen, MD, MBA, Vice President of Clinical Operations, BestPractices;
