Glucose control post-operatively has been demonstrated to reduce surgical site infections in diabetic and non-diabetic patients. Evidence is growing about the value of glucose control in other settings, but the implementation poses challenges. Strategies used by hospitals in IHI's 100,000 Lives Campaign will be discussed.
After this presentation you will be able to:
- Describe methods used by hospitals to maintain normal glycemiclevels in post-op patients.
- List challenges and risks when maintaining glucose control outside an intensive care unit.
- Explain why glycemiccontrol is becoming an important issue in health care beyond the cardiac surgical population.
