Adaptive reuse merges the qualities of existing buildings with the different needs of a new era, and the inherent design characteristics of an existing structure can have continuing or renewed resonance for a new use in a new context. We’ll discuss the challenges in adapting examples of superlative, original-genre buildings to new, very different uses. We’ll also examine three award-winning projects, from mild to aggressive levels of intervention, all under government review.
Learning objectives:
- Identify and compare the essential design qualities of the case study buildings in the context of how they affected the range of choices for reuse
- Examine three iconic 20th-century buildings transformed by adaptive reuse
- Appraise the opportunities in existing buildings for new uses for sustainability, technical challenges, code, and constructability.
