SA13 The Power of Career Pathing

Stephen A. Fiskum, AIA, and Sandy L. Parsley, Hammel Green and Abrahamson Inc., Minneapolis

Workforce demographics in architecture will dramatically change in the next few years. Today, 14 percent of the workforce is under 30 and one-third is over 50. In firms of all sizes, there is new and sometimes deep concern about the career pathways making architecture an attractive, positive, and compelling career choice. We’ll help you identify a roadmap to attract, retain, and grow top talent in your firm.

Learning objectives:

  • Review the generic value propositions of successful businesses and design practices, and examine human resource management techniques for achieving alignment of staff with a firm's success strategy
  • Explore and diagram the predominate career paths in a design firm and examine the interrelationships and associated skill competencies that enable staff to progress in a logical and meaningful manner
  • Develop new methods for enhancing staff performance and connect firm values and strategies with staff evaluation systems and meaningful career development programs.
