Using the National Park Service’s (NPS) historic landscape assessment process, review the successful investigation and documentation process employed to assess the San Francisco Presidio’s main parade ground prior to rehabilitation. Discuss the processes and procedures that identify and assess organizational, character-defining landscape features and elements, including circulation, vegetation, structures, lighting, and site furnishings.
Learning objectives:
- Review NPS categories of cultural landscapes, appropriate terminology for defining character of landscapes, historical significance, integrity, research and documentation tools, technologies and standards, and best management/maintenance practices
- Discuss the role of investigation and documentation in the assessment of historical significance, integrity, and condition of a historic landscape
- Develop appropriate recommendations for use, treatment, and interpretation of a historic landscape.
