FR48 Preventing Moisture in Building Envelopes

George E. Crow, III, AIA, CSI, CCS, LEED AP, McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., St. Louis
Joseph J. Godfryt, AIA, and
Richard A. Weber, SE, Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates Inc., Northbrook, Ill.

The cost of repairing moisture problems related to exterior envelopes can be astronomical after the building has been occupied. Prevention of moisture problems, while always more practical than solving them after construction, is often difficult to achieve. Review typical moisture problems and an approach to locating and addressing problems prior to and during construction.

Learning objectives:

  • Review the fundamentals of water management in the exterior envelope
  • Examine the framework for locating and addressing exterior envelope problems in new construction
  • Discuss unique solutions related to moisture problems using case-study examples.
