Moderator: Troy D. Thompson, AIA, LORD Cultural Resources Planning & Management, Washington, D.C.
Margie Johnson Reese, Cultural Affairs Department, Los Angeles
Duncan M. Webb, Webb Management Services Incorporated, New York City

Increased interest in participation, interaction, performing arts, public programming, and non-museum functions are fundamentally changing the value and purpose of museums in the United States. Using case studies, focus on “idea” and “community-building” museums to explore the changing nature of cultural institutions in the United States.

Learning objectives:

  • Identify the operational and organizational changes altering the nature of museums
  • Develop an overview of the architectural needs associated with these changes
  • Review the various ways in which museums are becoming more active in the urban fabric.
