Decades of work and activism by many individuals and organizations have created substantial momentum to restore the Los Angeles River and, as a result, the city of Los Angeles has contracted with a design team to master plan 32 miles of the river. Once thought of only as a backyard storm drain, the Los Angeles River now presents an opportunity to create a greenbelt of open space, recreation and community centers, schools, housing, and mixed-use development.
Learning objectives:
- Demonstrate how the architecture and urban design communities can partner with nonprofit and community organizations to create momentum for implementing dramatic change to the physical landscape
- Discuss how architects can garner political support and, working with public agencies, promote important urban design and architecture projects
- Demonstrate and promote understanding of community process, public/private partnerships, and best ecological and economic practice for a vital feature of Los Angeles.
