The U.S. Department of the Interior Standards for Rehabilitation discourages the use of salvage materials, yet some of the structures we admire most contain materials recycled from other buildings. What are the best and worst practices of salvage? Is there a best practice? Is preservation of parts of a historic building a viable alternate to losing it entirely? Discuss the history and current practices of architectural salvage.
Learning objectives:
- Explore historical uses of salvage material
- Evaluate appropriate, and perhaps innovative, applications for salvage material
- Assess salvage material with regard to contemporary design and preservation (including the Secretary of the Interior Standards).
