Hospice programs-a concept imported from Great Britain for care of the terminally ill-have only existed in the United States since the late 1960s. We’ll discuss how to respond to the growing demand for freestanding hospice centers that facilitate a meaningful experience for patients and family members within the context of high-quality palliative care.
Learning objectives:
- Identify quality-of-life principles for compassionate hospice care and list innovative design concepts to support those principles
- Analyze case studies that demonstrate design concepts to effectively support patient care needs, including the ability to respond quickly to sudden patient condition changes, without compromising dignity, comfort, or quality of life
- Design methods for reconciling residentially inspired details and finishes with required institutional codes to create a comfortable, compassionate environment.
