TH54 The Building Information Model as a Collaboration Tool

Moderator: Jim Bedrick, AIA, San Mateo, Calif.
Mario Guttman, AIA, Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum, San Francisco
Tony Rinella, Assoc. AIA, Anshen + Allen, San Francisco

Building projects require the integration of a team of professionals, and feedback is usually infrequent and delayed, and often fails to support the design intent. Using several case studies, we’ll examine how interoperable building information models (BIM) can help team members understand design intent, integrate work effectively, and radically speed up team feedback, saving time and money and eliminating value engineering.

Learning objectives:

  • Identify the features of BIM that support effective project team collaboration
  • Demonstrate how BIM can radically improve the effectiveness of project team collaboration and bring direct value to a project
  • Describe challenges of implementing model-based collaboration and how they can be overcome.
