TH53 Transit Architecture on the Edge: Meeting 21st Century Demands

Aspet David Davidian, AIA, Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Los Angeles
Porie Saikia-Eapen, AIA, New York Transit Authority, New York City
Anil Verma, AIA, Anil Verma Associates Inc., Los Angeles

The New York City transit system reflects the city’s fast-paced, highly diverse, enriched history and its forward march. The beginning of the 21st century finds the system poised to amplify these qualities by increasing the speed and diversity with which it meets passenger demands. The Los Angeles transit system is the resurgence of a new transit network, a little more than a quarter century after this world’s largest urban rail transit network was brought to a halt by private interests. Using this overview and history of the New York City and Los Angeles subway systems, explore the lessons learned from renovating and retrofitting exisiting stations to meet the challenges of interconnecting new and exisiting lines.

Learning objectives:

  • Review the historical development and evolution of the New York City and Los Angeles subway systems
  • List planning and design criteria of subway stations and identify program requirements for transit stations
  • Analyze passenger movement to design for an optimal service.
