TH44 Redefining a Behavioral Health Institution

Melissa M. Farling, AIA, Gould Evans, Phoenix
Bruce R. Ringwald, PE, ADOA Construction Services, Phoenix
Jack B. Silver, Phoenix

In the 1950s, psychiatric hospitals were warehouses for the mentally ill. Today, treatment focuses on social rehabilitation. The Arizona State Hospital Civil and Adolescent Behavioral Health Facility was designed as a model to promote treatment, incorporating a social rehabilitation mall simulating daily life events. Appraise the facility’s vision, program, design, and postoccupancy discoveries.

Learning objectives:

  • Evaluate the differences between designing an institution and designing a building that empowers its users
  • Identify how the design-build delivery method enabled all team members to share common goals, intentions, and passions and discuss why this was critical to this public institution
  • Appraise the importance of postoccupancy research on a project, and discover how to apply that knowledge to future work.
