TH41 Leadership and Advocacy through Design

Richard N. Swett, FAIA, Swett Associates Inc., Bow, N.H.

Effective leaders cultivate skills to meet today’s challenges and tomorrow’s opportunities. Use your design knowledge to great effect-from influencing powerful politicians to serving in public office to becoming a community activist. We’ll address how design leadership brings greater value to society, explain their leadership objectives, and detail the strategies used to achieve their desired outcome.

Learning objectives:

  • Develop leadership skills using design processes to enable wider engagement and partnership development with community stakeholders; find the route to leadership from a variety of vantage points
  • Recognize unmet design needs in your community/field of influence and identify key issues and opportunities through which successful relationships can be built among you, your practice, and the community
  • Cultivate leadership potential by acquiring and honing advocacy skills and share leadership experiences among peers.
