TH33 Opening Details: Accessible Transition Between Inside and Out

Moderator: Wendy Talarico, Irvington, N.Y.
Tom Kundig, FAIA, Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects, Seattle
Jane Weinzapfel, FAIA, NCARB, Leers Weinzapfel Associates Architects Inc., Boston

Openings are architecturally interesting and technologically challenging. Using recent project examples, we’ll discuss how to make openings beautiful, functional, and weathertight; the aesthetic and technical challenges of accessibility; and the range of innovative door materials, from hangar doors to sliding glass exterior walls.

Learning objectives:

  • Design and detail door systems that are weathertight, while gaining a broader knowledge of innovative entry details
  • Review details that improve accessibility and safety
  • Examine a range of door and opening materials and techniques.
