TH31 Rebirth of the Master Builder – The BIM Paradigm Shift

Alberto Cavallero, AIA, The Kling Partnership, Philadelphia
Rick Herskovitz, Architectural Woodwork Industries, Philadelphia

Building information modeling (BIM) holds the promise of returning the architect to the position of master builder. However, this promise brings with it an equally unprecedented set of challenges. Using a case study of the BIM process from design through construction of a complex auditorium interior, we’ll define BIM; examine a theoretical and historical overview of the changing role of architectural representation past, present, and future; and engage in open-forum discussion.

Learning objectives:

  • Identify cases where the building information modeling process may be of use as opposed to conventional modes of representation
  • Appraise and compare design solutions at an advanced level
  • Analyze complex problems and solve them before construction.
