The preservation community led the rebirth of our older cities, presenting the first alternative to sprawl. Today, as buildings in core communities become eligible for tax benefits, smart growth and historic preservation advocates are working together to form policies that focus on growth, unlocking funding for affordable housing and revitalizing main streets.
Learning objectives:
- Discuss how smart growth and preservation advocates can work together to achieve common goals, creating affordable housing, focusing development toward core communities, and promoting walkable communities
- Review current goals and strategies of leading historic preservation and smart growth organizations
- Examine specific ways in which architects can help build new and stronger collaborations between smart growth and historic preservation advocates.
