TH21 The New Sonic Boom: Designing Dynamic Acoustic Environments

Jim Lutz, University of Memphis, Memphis
Steve Roden, in between noise, Pasadena, Calif.

The sonic potential of architectural space has become a hot topic, and new and innovative sound technologies allow designers to shape perceptions of space as never before. Using a variety of case studies by Zaha Hadid, Toyo Ito, Diller + Scofidio, and Alvaro Siza, you’ll see, hear, analyze, and discuss the latest in acoustically informed architecture and create a unique sound installation.

Learning objectives:

  • Identify the newest innovations in sound technology: hypersonic sound (HSS), mass transducers, active noise cancellation, haptic and gestural sensors
  • Describe how architects and sound-artists have used interdisciplinary collaboration to produce sonically informed environments
  • Demonstrate the relationship between sound and space by creating an interactive site-specific sound installation.
