Traditional philanthropy dominates the sector, often
reinforces the status quo, and may limit change. The
sector’s writing, professional associations, and conferences
do not give equal voice or recognition to socialchange
philanthropy. This session explores conflicts
between the two kinds of philanthropy. And some
remarks may make you uncomforatable. Martin Luther
King, Jr. once said, “Philanthropy is commendable, but
it must not cause the philanthropists to overlook the
circumstances of economic injustice that make philanthropy
necessary.”
