D24/E24 Implementing a Comprehensive Support Program for Patients, Families, and Caregivers Following an Adverse Event

Disclosure and apology are here to stay, but the missing piece is still a systematic response built into systems for patients, families, and caregivers that address their emotional well-being following an adverse medical event. This session presents an overview of various support tools and how to successfully implement them, and engages participants in identifying practical ways to get started in their own organizations.

After this presentation you will be able to:

  • Identify and discuss the barriers that prevent the utilization of these supports.
  • Describe the Emotional Support Activation for providing patients and families with emotional support, and the Peer Support Team model focused on caregiver support.
  • Develop an action plan for next steps to implement a support program in your institution.

Linda K. Kenney, President/Founder, MITSS; Frederick A. van Pelt, MD, MBA, Quality Consultant, Anesthesiologist, Brigham and Women’s Hospital
