D5/E5 Increasing the Use of Ambulatory Care for Emergency Patients

The NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement in England initiated a High Volume Care Program to study best practice in short stay emergency care. As a result, a “Directory of Ambulatory Emergency Care for Adults” was published to help guide and promote the use of ambulatory care for patients who would have traditionally received inpatient care.

After this presentation you will be able to:

  • Develop a plan for converting emergency patients from inpatient care to ambulatory care.
  • Describe a framework to measure the impact that this approach can have on medical practice.
  • Establish a framework to measure the patient safety and quality outcome implications of this approach.

Ian Sturgess, MBChB, Clinical Director, East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust; Mark Jennings, MBA, BSc CEng, Delivering Quality and Value Priority Program Director, NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement; Sarbjit M. Purewal, BA (Hons), Associate, NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement
