Simulation is being widely adopted in health care settings; however, it is unclear how best to use it and whether it actually improves outcomes. This session uses interactive simulation and explores the role of simulation training in improving safety in the UK National Health Service, Kaiser Permanente, and other health care systems. Findings and lessons learned from a randomized study of simulation vs. non-simulation for obstetric emergencies in the UK will be presented. Data that demonstrate a clear association between simulation and improved perinatal outcomes will be described.
After this presentation you will be able to:
- Discuss how large health care systems are using simulation to improve safety.
- Review evidence that simulation changes outcomes, behaviors, and systems.
- Describe the operational requirements and learnings, as well as the strengths and hazards of simulation training.
