201 Codes, Territories, and Political Landmines: A Case Study on Creating a “Best Practices” Code of Ethics and Negotiating the Obstacles to Implementation

Joel Rogers
Senior Consultant, RedHawk Communications, Inc.
Kevin Sullivan
Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer,
Allstate Insurance Company

Hear a real-life story about the creation and implementation of a rewritten, redesigned Code of Ethics at Allstate Insurance Company, with practical tools for navigating the treacherous path from deciding to create a “best practices” Code of Ethics to implementing it successfully in the real-world. High-level discussions will address current best practices for codes of ethics, including issues that must be covered and how to ensure that a Code is userfriendly, readable and a useful reference for employees. Effective roll-out and quick adoption across an organization will also be addressed. The discussion will include:

  • How it was determined that a new Code was necessary
  • The existing structure of the Code program, and the decision to have the Code program and Code itself reviewed by an outside party
  • The process of redrafting, reviewing, and negotiating a final draft of the Code
