TH63 Sustainable Design in the Post-Katrina Era

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, how should sustainable buildings be designed and built in disaster-prone areas? Presenters will report on a series of charrettes that was held at the U.S. Green Building Council Greenbuild Conference in November 2005. They will provide a progress report on efforts to green Gulf Coast reconstruction and report on new design criteria that emerged in the charrettes: “passive survivability.”

   Learning objectives:

  • Apply sustainable design strategies when designing in disaster-prone areas
  • Discuss how green architects can respond to future disasters
  • Incorporate principles of passive survivability into building projects
