Sustainable design, in consort with a greater awareness of the historical value of Modernism, offers new opportunities and strategies for reusing buildings. Using Crown Hall and Herman Miller headquarters as case studies, this presentation will describe the application of sustainable design in the context of a modern landmark and one of its progeny, demonstrating that a rigorous green design process can advance building reuse by successfully addressing user needs and preservation criteria.
Learning objectives:
- Identify characteristics of mid-20th century modern buildings and describe the technical, economic, regulatory, and architectural challenges to sustainable design and preservation that this era of buildings presents
- Demonstrate the interrelationship between sustainability, historic preservation, engineering, and building revitalization, ensuring not only their survival but also their continued vitality
- Analyze and deploy strategies, tools, and technologies for implementing successful sustainable design that respects the historical intentions of the architecture of 20th century Modernism
