TH16 The IBC: A Step-by-Step Process

By following a step-by-step process, you’ll be able to apply and use the building code standards and requirements for your project and more successfully design and comply with the basic building code provisions. The process helps to clarify portions of the code that might otherwise be overlooked, misapplied, or misunderstood. The program will use the aforementioned process to instruct on fundamental issues and more detailed requirements related to occupancy, allowable height and area, construction type, fire resistance, and means of egress.

   Learning objectives:

  • Initiate an International Building Code (IBC) code-compliant architectural design to use the code in conceptual, schematic, and design development phases as a tool for design rather than a governmental mandate
  • Apply the procedural steps necessary to create an IBC code-compliant building and locate/apply the correct code tables and provisions
  • Analyze a project for code compliance for the major aspects of the 2006 International Building Code, thereby arriving at a code-conforming design
