SA48 The Role of Ethics in Sustaining the Profession: More than Just Words on Paper

The furious pace of practice has left little time in recent years for members to take the time to contemplate how ethical and legal requirements may influence emerging practice paradigms. Financial opportunities and schedule constraints focus our attention elsewhere. Thus, in-depth reading of the AIA Code of Ethics often first occurs when a member is contemplating filing a case complaint or when a complaint has been filed against them. When party to an ethical case, the code is read with an emphasis on the rules because violation of the rules can result in sanctions being levied against a member. But the code has a broader foundation as found in the canons and ethical principles. These rarely read and barely analyzed aspects of the code will be explored in depth.

   Learning objectives:

  • Review the events and historical forces that gave birth to, and shaped, the AIA Code of Ethics, the AIA Antitrust Compliance Statement and Procedures, and the AIA Antitrust Compliance Guidelines
  • Discuss how the AIA Code of Ethics Canons and Ethical Standards infuse and enhance all aspects of the profession and explore tools for discussing ethics and legal issues with colleagues, employees, and clients
  • Discuss how building information modeling, outsourcing, and evolving practice models will be molded by legal and ethical aspects of practice
