SA22 Lifecycle Building Design: Reducing Energy and Resource Impacts

Design techniques, systems, and materials choices must grow beyond green materials to ensure resource efficiency through adaptability, reuse, and recycling. National experts in design for building disassembly will share challenges and opportunities, off-the-shelf materials and connections, and innovative case studies of design for flexibility and end-of-life management. New findings on reducing embodied energy, transportation, and resource conservation impacts will be presented.

   Learning objectives:

  • Use, develop, and submit lifecycle building features and practices under an EPA, AIA, Building Materials Reuse Association challenge (currently under development)
  • Compare and analyze innovative building, component, systems designs, reuse opportunities, deconstruction techniques, and the associated lifecycle energy and resource conservation impacts
  • Appraise the latest case study experiences on design for disassembly and reuse as well as barriers to building flexibility
