SA17 Design Issues and Considerations for Improving Sustainable Roofs

Sustainability in building design and construction is gaining acceptance by the public and is slowly becoming a requirement of many components of the built environment, including roof-top construction. Green (landscaped) roofs and cool (reflective) roofs are becoming more common. Photovoltaic panels are also being installed on roofs to generate electricity from the sun. But green roofs and covered plaza decks present unique waterproofing challenges that are not associated with traditional roof design. The basics of good roof and waterproofing design for green roofs, plaza decks, and reflective roofs will be presented along with the advantages and disadvantages of different roofing and waterproofing systems for various applications.

   Learning objectives:

  • Implement sustainability into roofing systems while avoiding the many pitfalls
  • Differentiate between the advantages and disadvantages of various roof and waterproofing systems
  • Explain various roof and waterproofing conditions
