SA15 Adaptive Use of Historic Urban Structures

Projects that combine sustainable design, adaptive use, historic preservation, and neighborhood revitalization are technically challenging and difficult but, when successfully executed, they have an incredibly powerful effect that extends well beyond the confines of a particular site. Neighborhoods integrating diverse uses and preserving the complex layering of architecture in historic neighborhoods have a depth, vitality, and positive influence that cannot be replicated with new developments.

   Learning objectives:

  • Discuss the specific challenges of integrating sustainable design strategies into the adaptive use of historic structures, including historic tax credit issues and brownfields concerns
  • Review how the adaptive use of older urban structures can act as an effective catalyst for neighborhood revitalization and civic engagement
  • Apply a variety of financing strategies and lifecycle cost analyses to fund these types of adaptive use projects
