Collaboration on the planning of a new science facility for biological research, using LEED-NC silver certification as the goal and integrating Labs21 principles, brings into focus the synergies possible for changing the way we work together (owner, user, architect, and engineer) as sustainability becomes mainstream. Beyond buildings, integrated design, architecture, and engineering can yield process innovations and further change strategies toward creating high performance design firms.
Learning objectives:
- Describe the process of integrating LEED and Labs21 into our design practices and integrate these lessons learned using these guiding design principles and business goals synergistically
- Identify the benefits of involving all stakeholders early in the project development process to support the project’s sustainable design and LEED certification goal
- Evaluate the economic value of sustainable design practices and the integration of LEED principles to financially benefit clients and the growth of firms based on actual project successes
