FR33 Photocatalysis: Self-Cleaning Buildings and Pollution Abatement

Photocatalysis is a new nanotechnology that uses solar energy to make building materials self-cleaning and reduces air pollution. Used on a growing number of buildings in Europe and Asia, this sustainable technology is now available in the United States and is used on concrete, glass, tile, and other products. By understanding the technology and learning about recent research and case studies, architects will be better prepared to incorporate photocatalysts into best industry practices and green design.
    Learning objectives:

  • Define photocatalysis and describe how it works
  • Identify how and where self-cleaning materials can be best used to maintain the appearance of a building, reduce building maintenance costs, and reduce the environmental impact associated with building maintenance
  • Assess the potential of photocatalysts for depollution by removing volatile organic compounds and odors to improve urban and indoor air quality
