The value of adaptive use of industrial sites is that eccentricity and authenticity are not created; they exist and are revitalized by adhering to sustainable principles, creative urban design, and inventive, rigorous development strategies. Rather than creating a new place, an urban design/development team seeks to capture the spirit of the place by assembling the appropriate mix of activities and uses which requires careful compatibility programming to create a synergistic and vital village. Three case studies will illustrate how adaptive use can transform overlooked sites.
Learning objectives:
- Review the steps required to set development goals for large adaptive use projects and to create an urban design team capable of achieving them
- Analyze the complex strategies required for successful adaptive use projects to attract the right activities and occupants to foster sustainable social interaction
- Share lessons learned since the completion of projects and explain how that knowledge has improved practice and urban design approach
