Jack Siegel, an attorney, CPA, and author of /A Desktop Guide for Nonprofit Directors, Officers, and Their Advisors/ (Wiley 2006), will focus on the legal issues confronted by fundraisers every day. Are pledges legally enforceable? How can a charity protect its mission, prerogatives, and finances when it receives a restricted gift? What should you do if a donor wants to describe a donation as a contract? Can you remove a donor's name from a building if he is convicted of a serious felony? Jack will explore these and other large donor issues by examining the recent experiences of a number of well-known charities. He will then turn to smaller donors. What happens when small donors direct their donations? How should the charity address overhead charges against directed gifts? How can a charity avoid having a journalist use its IRS Form 990 (annual tax return) to write an unflattering article? |
