Tom Szaky is the CEO and co-founder of Terracycle Inc., based in Trenton, NJ, which manufacturers, packages and distributes the world’s first commercial products made exclusively from garbage. The products – an assortment of liquid plant foods made from organic worm poop – come in recycled soda bottles with spray caps that are the extras from manufacturers of other spray-on products. The boxes used for shipping are the misprinted rejects of major bottling companies. A native of Hungary who grew up in Canada, Szaky was a 19-year-old freshman at Princeton University when he launched the business with his friend and classmate Jon Beyer. Szaky eventually dropped out of college to work full-time on Terracycle, raising money in the early days by entering – and winning – business plan competitions. This year, the company will do $5 million in sales. Its products can be found in Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and other major retailers throughout the United States and Canada.
